Minutes from May 7, 2014
The Board Meeting for the Trustees of Brown Memorial Library was called to order at 6:05 p.m.
Attendance: Mary-Chris Duncan, Nola Jordan, Robert Toppi, Erica Gross, Garry Kalajian, Laurie Buchar, Bea Howe, Connie Scheffy
1. Garry chaired the meeting in Patty’s absence and Bob was seated as a voting member.
2. The Secretary’s report was accepted as presented.
3. A motion was made and passed to accept donations to Brown Memorial Library in April in the amount of $167.00. $141.00 of that amount came from our on-going book sale, $20.00 from book bags and $6.00 from headphones. The treasurer’s report was accepted as presented.
4. Sitting in for Meg, who was on vacation, Laurie reported that the circulation numbers for children’s books have increased as both local preschools are visiting the library regularly and checking out books to take back to their classrooms. Many of those same children attended the very successful pajama party, and eighty children participated in the Easter egg hunt.
5. Under New Business, Laurie explained plans for the Summer Reading Program, which has as its theme this year “Get a Clue at the Library”. The time has been moved to Mondays from 2:00 to 3:00 pm as that is convenient for the preschools. The four programs will include making molds of animal tracks under the auspices of the Lake Sunapee Protection Association, learning about paper folding with Becky Bense, some form of a game of Clue, and a scavenger hunt. Laurie is visiting elementary school classrooms to invite children to participate. Bea expressed our gratitude to Laurie for all she does to make Summer Reading such a success.
6. In cooperation with the Friends of the Library and the BACC, the library plans to host a theater workshop for children ages 6 to 18 August 6 to 8. The workshop will be run by Will Ogmundsen and Tom Dunn, and the children will present a musical play entitled The Lending Doll. The cost to us is $600.00. The Trustees voted to make up any part of that amount which is not covered by donations from the Friends, the BACC and/or audience members.
7. Bea reported that she and Erica attended the first meeting of the Capital Improvement Program Committee. Bea has prepared our application which needs to be submitted by Friday. Sunapee Valley Builders has quoted us a price of $17,600 to put a new roof on the building. It was agreed that this should be considered a high priority item.
8. We will hold our Memorial Day book and plant sale on Saturday, May 24. The Trustees decided to keep the on-going book sale running in the meantime.
9. The Trustees were delighted to learn that the Masons have once again generously offered to sponsor a fund-raising dinner for the library. It will be held Saturday, August 16, from 5:30 – 7:00 pm. We will provide desserts and wait staff.
10. Thanks are due Bob Shevette for donating a telescope to the library.
11. Under Old Business, Erica reported that there is a good chance there will be no Fourth of July Parade this year as no one has stepped forward to run it. Most of the other traditional events will take place, however, and we will also do another book and plant sale.
12. The Skywatch event will take place at Webb’s Field on May 30 at 9:00 pm. The rain date is May 31.
13. Garry reported that the prison workshop is unable to make a sign giving the library hours in the format we want. Further discussion was tabled until Meg returns.
14. On May 21 we are co-sponsoring a program about the photographer Margaret Bourke-White at 1:30 pm at the Warner Town Hall.
15. On August 21 we will host a program about the continuing popularity of Sherlock Holmes sponsored by the NH Humanities Council
The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at 6:00 p.m.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:08 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Nola Jordan, Secretary
