Bradford Conservation Commission Secretary’s Draft Report
August 15, 2023, 7pm at Brown Memorial Library
Present: George Beaton, Seth Benowitz, Ann Eldridge, Meg Fearnley, Patty Furness, Brooks McCandlish and Doug Southard.
Secretary’s Draft Report: The draft minutes of 7/18/23 were reviewed. Meg made a motion to accept the report as read, George seconded, followed by unanimous approval.
Treasurer’s Report: Meg noted that we missed the rollover of one of our two CDs in May, due to late notification. It was agreed that it will likely be worth taking a penalty to get a higher interest rate. Meg will inquire with Marilyn Goldberg, Town Treasurer. Our remaining 2023 budget is $357. Maps need to be printed. Alaina Bandanza has yet to submit a bill for her program on Native Bees. Programs were discussed, and Brooks will contact Matt Tarr, a Professor in Natural Resources at UNH, for a possible spring birding program/field trip.
Bradford Springs Hotel Site: Ann stated that dirt is needed for the driveway at this location, as tree roots are exposed. Ann will contact Steve Hall for suggestions on a possible fill source.
NHDES: An Alteration of Terrain permit was approved on the property abutting the Warner River off of Breezy Hill Road. Ken Milender (Warner River Local Advisory Committee) would like a site inspection to view the erosion control measures which were mandated. Ann will send a letter to NHDES in support of this site inspection request. George recently kayaked with Ryan Leo (NHDES) on this section of the Warner River to inspect the buffer zone in this area along the river. No problems with further erosion were observed, and the storm drain/culvert appear to be functioning well.
Hoyt Brook Monitoring: The second monitoring outing occurred today in a section of Hoyt Brook on Old Mountain Road in Lucasville.
Warner River Local Advisory Committee: Becca will represent Bradford as a successor to Patty on the WRLAC. Ann has printed out the necessary State forms needed for this to officially occur.
Deer Valley Road Culvert Project: A priority mitigation status for the Deer Valley Road culvert project is being sought by Ben Nugent from NH Fish and Game. Replacement of this culvert is of great importance, so a statement of support from the BCC will be sent.
Bradford Pines Bridge: The bridge has been replaced by an unknown benefactor.
Planning Board: A subcommittee for surface water protection (Shoreland Protection Overlay) is forming. There is an introductory meeting Friday (8/18) at the town offices at 10 a.m.
Trail Map Update: Ann will email the new modifications to BCC members for review.
Battles Farm: George, Seth and Owen Dempsey put in a hard day of labor to improve the trails at the Battles easement. There was much gratitude expressed for this generous volunteer effort!
With no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:10pm. The next meeting will be held September 19, 2023, 7pm at Brown Memorial Library.
Respectfully submitted,
Patty Furness, Secretary
